Fake Parking Payment Websites on the Rise, Warns Consumer Watchdog
A consumer watchdog has raised the alarm over a surge in fake parking payment websites duping drivers into handing over their payment details. These scam sites, pretending to be legit parking app providers, are sneaking to the top of Google search results and catching users off guard.
Which? Investigation Uncovers Shady Parking Scams
Consumer group Which? launched a probe that uncovered many cases of drivers targeted by these fraudulent sites. The scams often lure users with “free downloads” that hide costly subscription fees once you dig deeper.
The bogus sites mimic popular parking apps like JustPark, PayByPhone, and RingGo. Shockingly, these fakes sometimes appear above the real companies in Google searches, making it tricky to spot the con.
Fake ULEZ Payment Sites Targeting Motorists
Which? also found sham sites pretending to be official Ultra-Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) payment portals. Drivers trying to pay real charges got caught handing over sensitive data to scammers instead.
How to Stay Safe: Which? Issues Warning
- Only download parking apps from the official Apple App Store or Google Play Store.
- Beware of clicking unfamiliar links or entering personal details on untrusted websites.
Despite Google’s pledge to remove ads breaking its policies, Which? revealed some scam sites still dominate top search results months after being reported. Drivers must stay alert to avoid falling victim.
