Lockdown Crackdown: 36 Fines Hit Rule-Breakers in Devon and Cornwall
Since the national lockdown kicked off on Tuesday 5 January, Devon and Cornwall Police have handled around 885 COVID-related reports. Of those, 699 needed action under their 3Es approach – Engage, Explain, and Encourage.
Fines Flying Out for Lockdown Breaches
The force has slapped 36 fixed penalty notices on offenders. This includes nine for illegal outdoor gatherings, four for leaving the house without a valid reason, and 15 for indoor parties. Patrols have been stepped up with high-visibility checks, clocking over 800 stop-checks and writing about a dozen more fines.
Quiet Roads and Dropping Crime Rates
Lockdown has clearly taken a bite out of crime and road chaos. Traffic collisions have dropped sharply as roads stay quieter than usual. Overall crime is down 11% compared to before lockdown. Plus, 999 emergency calls are down 10%, while 101 non-emergency calls have surged 23% — showing people are eager to report concerns.
Police Urge Public to Stay Responsible and Save Lives
Devon and Cornwall Police cover the largest area in the country, so we can’t be everywhere at once,” a spokesperson said. “It’s vital everyone follows lockdown rules to save lives.”
“The vast majority are obeying, and we respond promptly to reports of rule-breaking. Our 4Es approach continues, but personal responsibility remains key. We ask people to follow the spirit, not just the letter, of the Government’s COVID-19 guidance.”
Stay safe out there – and keep those gatherings to a minimum!
