Massive 200-Tonne Lorry Brings London to a Halt Despite Police Escort
Chaos hit London streets on Saturday evening as a colossal 57-metre, 200-tonne haulage lorry smashed over road furniture and ground parts of the city to a standstill—even with a full police escort.
Giant Transformer Haul Slows London Traffic
The massive lorry was ferrying a £25 million electrical transformer for the national grid. Coming all the way from the Netherlands, the transformer’s journey snaked through London and part of the M25 under the watchful eye of the Commercial Vehicle Unit from 1 Police.
Weighing 200 tonnes and stretching 57 metres long, the lumbering vehicle crawled along at a snail’s pace of 10-15 mph. Its slow speed and gargantuan size forced it onto indirect routes to reach the new power station in Wandsworth.
Police Escort and Public Spectacle
Four officers and a specialist haulage team provided a close escort, believing Saturday nights would mean less traffic. But the sight of the towering transporter sparked a frenzy among Saturday night revellers. Drinkers and pedestrians stopped in their tracks, snapping selfies and cheering on the ‘road circus’ that had taken over London’s roads.
Powering London’s Future
Despite the disruption, the transformer is crucial. Millions across London will depend on it daily for uninterrupted electricity. This mammoth operation was a necessary headache to keep the city powered up for years to come.
