EastEnders Star Rudolph Walker Reveals Harrowing Homeless Ordeal

Beloved EastEnders legend Rudolph Walker has opened up about a dark chapter in his life. The 84-year-old, famous for playing Patrick Trueman since 2001, revealed he was once homeless — all while still filming at the BBC’s Elstree studios.

From Screen Icon to Sleeping Rough

In a heartfelt interview with The Mirror, ahead of his new autobiography Walking With Dignity, Rudolph disclosed how his costly divorce from second wife Dounne Alexander MBE left him penniless. “I just didn’t have any financial means. I was literally starting from scratch again in my 70s, with nowhere to live. It was a time of great pain and loneliness,” he said.

Despite his struggles, Rudolph kept his hardship hidden from his EastEnders colleagues. “Some days on my way to the studio, I would pull up at the side of the road, have a cry,” he admitted. “I’d pull myself together, arrive at the studio, and the environment would act as a tonic. It was a sort of double life.”

Support from Co-stars and Old Friends

Co-star Diane Parish, who plays Denise Fox, sensed something was wrong and checked in on him during breaks, but Rudolph never shared the full extent of his struggles at the time. Meanwhile, his first wife, Lorna Ross, offered him shelter despite their separation, letting him stay at a friend’s home. “Bless her. We are still extremely good friends. It didn’t take me out of what I was experiencing, but it cushioned a lot,” he revealed.

Late-night shoots sometimes became a lifeline, with the BBC providing hotel rooms where Rudolph would often find himself alone, asking, “Who am I? Why am I in this position?” All the while, the public saw only Patrick Trueman – unaware of the turmoil behind the scenes.

Turning a Corner: Walking With Dignity

A decade on, Rudolph is in a much better place. Reflecting on his journey, he said, “I know today, people will go to a psychiatrist, seek help, and maybe I should have done, but I was getting it with the people that I had around me. Am I happy with where I am today? Yes, I’m extremely happy.”

His memoir, Walking With Dignity, hits bookstores on September 26 via Chronos Publishing. It promises an unflinching, inspiring look at his incredible life on and off screen.
