£1 Million Flood Defence Boost for York Homes and Businesses

The Environment Agency is splashing out £1 million to protect over 100 homes and businesses in York at risk of flooding. The move comes after decades of relentless flooding, including severe deluges in 2000 and 2015, when 620 properties were swamped.

New Defences Target Naburn, Acaster Malbis, and Beyond

Properties in York and nearby villages like Naburn and Acaster Malbis have suffered floods sneaking through doorways and air bricks, causing costly damage to property and furniture. The latest scheme will install flood barriers, non-return valves, self-closing air bricks, and pumps to keep floodwater at bay. Work will continue through December, fully funded by the Environment Agency.

Experts and Residents Speak Out on Flood Fight

Environment Agency Area Flood Risk Manager Paul Stockhill said: “With climate change, we can’t wipe out flood risks entirely, but we can make communities tougher. Big defences help, but property-level measures often do the trick. These new tools will give York residents peace of mind, limiting damage and speeding up recovery.”

“This £1 million is part of a wider £45 million programme to bolster York’s flood defences. Alongside a £38 million upgrade to the Foss Barrier, we’re aiming to shield more than 2,000 homes and businesses across the city.”

Stanley Shoobridge, 92, Acaster Malbis resident, said: “I’m thrilled with my new flood defences—much easier than dragging sandbags around. When floods hit, I’m stranded on an island, so having easy-to-fit barriers is a lifesaver. Living in an 18th-century cottage, seepage was a nightmare, but now I’ve got pumps and four automatic air grates. No more worrying about covering up.”

Cllr Paula Widdowson, City of York Council’s Executive Member for Climate Change and the Environment, said: “Protecting homes and businesses is a top priority as floods become more frequent. This fresh £1 million boost helps shield residents in Naburn, Acaster Malbis, and surrounds, building on the great work already underway.”

“Thanks to a £110 million flood alleviation programme led by the Council and the Environment Agency, more than 2,000 properties in York now stand stronger against flooding and the impacts of climate change.”
