Family Freed After Horror A31 Crash Near Four Marks
A family was dramatically cut free from their trapped car after a severe head-on smash on the A31 near Four Marks on Sunday evening, 5th November 2017. The crash involved three vehicles and sparked a major emergency response just before 7pm.
Major Crash Closes A31
The collision, which occurred close to The Strave on the outskirts of Four Marks village, involved a Citroen C1, Mitsubishi Outlander, and Jaguar XE. Hampshire Roads Policing officers from Whitchurch shut down the busy 30mph stretch of road as rescue operations got underway.
Firefighters Use Jaws of Life to Rescue Family
Crews from Hampshire Fire and Rescue, including teams from Alton, Winchester, and Alresford, raced to the scene. Firefighters had to remove the roof of the Mitsubishi Outlander using specialist cutting tools to free a trapped family inside following the brutal collision.
Five Injured, Serious Conditions Reported
- The 70-year-old Mitsubishi driver escaped with minor injuries.
- The 72-year-old passenger in the Mitsubishi suffered serious injuries.
- The Citroen C1 driver, a 66-year-old woman, sustained life-threatening injuries.
- A 49-year-old female passenger in the Citroen was seriously hurt.
- The Jaguar XE driver, a 56-year-old man, was treated at the scene for minor injuries.
All four seriously injured victims were rushed to southampton-general-hospital/" title="Southampton General Hospital" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">Southampton General Hospital for urgent treatment. South Central Ambulance service also responded swiftly to the scene.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Hampshire Police confirmed the road was closed for over four hours for collision investigation and cleanup, with specialist recovery firm JD Motors assisting. Sergeant Andy Noble said:
“I am appealing for anyone with information about this incident to get in touch. A number of people have been seriously injured and the road was closed for hours while we dealt with this. If you witnessed anything or have details that could assist police, please contact us.”
