Canterbury Blaze: Fire Crews Battle Huge Derelict Store Fire for Over 24 Hours
Night Watch on High Street
Three fire engines and a height vehicle will stay on Canterbury High Street overnight. Firefighters continue to monitor the smouldering ruins of a massive blaze that tore through a derelict former Debenhams store. Crews have battled the fire non-stop for more than 24 hours to get it under control and keep the public safe.
Local Businesses Rally Behind Firefighters
Kent Fire and Rescue Service thanked Canterbury’s city centre businesses for their vital support. “Local shops and cafes provided refreshments and facilities to our exhausted crews during the day,” said a spokesperson. The show of community spirit helped fuel the firefighters’ relentless efforts.
“We also thank residents for following our safety advice to keep windows and doors shut while smoke was heavy in the area,” the service added. That warning has now been lifted.
Cause Unknown, Investigation Underway
The fire erupted around 8:30pm on December 2 in the abandoned department store. The cause remains unknown as officials prepare for a full investigation. Early on, the blaze grew fierce enough to prompt evacuation orders for nearby homes and businesses. One person needed treatment for smoke inhalation.
Heroic Effort Saves Historic Canterbury
At its peak, the firefight involved eight fire engines, specialist equipment, and around 50 firefighters. Their swift action stopped the flames from spreading to Canterbury’s treasured historic buildings.
Despite containment, hotspots remain, so crews will keep a close watch overnight. Residents are urged to steer clear of the area and let emergency teams finish their work safely.
More updates on the investigation and recovery efforts will follow in the coming days.
