Man Arrested Over Murder of Southampton Teen Lucy McHugh – First Picture Released
A care worker has been arrested in connection with the shocking murder of 13-year-old Southampton teenager Lucy McHugh. The man, named locally as Stephen Nicholson, remains in police custody as officers continue their investigation.
Tragic Discovery of Lucy’s Body
Lucy McHugh, also known as Lucy White, went missing after leaving her home on Mansel Road East at 9.30am on Wednesday 25 July. Her body was found the next morning at 7.45am in woodland near the Sports Centre by a dog walker, who promptly alerted the authorities.
The care worker arrested works for a local firm in Totton and reportedly befriended Lucy’s mum after needing a place to stay following a family dispute. Police are currently searching the property he shares with Lucy’s mother and her partner, as well as a second property linked to the suspect’s sister on the same road.
Police Appeal for Witnesses
Detective Superintendent Paul Barton said:
“This is a tragic incident and our thoughts go out to Lucy’s family and friends at this terrible time. We are continuing to investigate the circumstances of her death and are asking for the public’s help.”
Officers want to know what Lucy did after leaving her home and are urging anyone who saw her or had contact with her on Wednesday to come forward.
