Heartbreaking Discovery in Brighton Baby Search
Police in Brighton have uncovered the body of a baby after a huge manhunt involving 200 officers. The tragic find ends nearly two months of frantic searching for the missing couple, Constance Marten and Mark Gordon, and their newborn child.
Remains Found Near Arrest Site
The baby’s body was discovered in a wooded area close to where the couple was arrested on Monday. Detective Superintendent Lewis Basford described the end of the investigation as “heartbreaking” for both the local community and the public.
“We will do everything possible to find out what happened,” Basford added.
A large crime scene cordon remains in place around allotments, nearby houses, and woodland where the body was found. A post-mortem is set to determine the cause of death.
Couple Arrested on Grave Charges
Marten and Gordon were first detained on suspicion of child neglect after being spotted by a member of the public at a shop. They were then re-arrested on Tuesday for gross negligence manslaughter after refusing to reveal the baby’s whereabouts.
The couple vanished in early January after their car caught fire on the M61 near Bolton. Marten had recently given birth, but shockingly, the newborn never received medical care.
Massive Search Ends in Tragedy
Over 200 officers combed through 90 square miles of Brighton, using sniffer dogs, drones, thermal cameras, and helicopters. Searches took place in parks like Wild Park in Moulsecoomb, ponds, allotments, and wooded areas.
Authorities believe the couple moved around at night, avoided detection by using cash, and sometimes slept in tents. They were seen in Liverpool, Essex, east London, and last spotted near Brighton on January 8.
Background Shadows the Case
Mark Gordon, 48, is a convicted sex offender who served 20 years in an American prison for rape. Constance Marten, 35, hails from an aristocratic family with royal connections. Her parents pleaded with her to come forward during the investigation.
CCTV footage from Monday night showed Gordon limping on a stick during the couple’s arrest in Brighton.
This tragic case continues to grip the nation as police work tirelessly to piece together what led to the heartbreaking death of the baby.
