UK Boosts Holocaust Memorial Funding for Auschwitz Liberation 80th Anniversary
The UK Government has pumped extra cash into the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust to mark the 80th anniversary of Auschwitz-Birkenau’s liberation in 2025.
Major Commemoration Set for 2025
Holocaust Memorial Day, held every January 27, is a solemn reminder of the past. The 2025 event will be even bigger, reflecting on the horrors of the Holocaust and promoting unity and understanding.
It will also mark 30 years since the Srebrenica genocide, spotlighting ongoing dangers of hate and intolerance long after World War II.
£80,000 Boost to Reach Millions
Faith Minister Lord Khan commented, “We are committed to ensuring the lessons of the Holocaust are never forgotten. The 80th anniversary is a time for deep reflection, and to remember the six million Jewish men, women and children murdered by the Nazis.”
The government’s extra £80,000 will help the Trust stage a large-scale event, reaching millions via broadcasts. Total government funding now stands at £980,000 for the year.
Holocaust Memorial Day Trust Chief Executive Olivia Marks-Woldman said, “The 2025 commemorations will engage millions across the UK—in local communities, across social and traditional media, and at the UK Ceremony.”
Government Pledges Education and Curriculum Support
This boost comes after the Prime Minister’s pledge to the Holocaust Education Trust to give every young person access to survivor testimony.
The government also confirmed Holocaust education will stay in the school curriculum, including in some state schools currently exempt.
The increased funding ensures nationwide participation in remembrance, keeping the lessons of history alive for future generations.
