Great South Run Cancelled Over Severe Weather Warning
The annual Great South Run in Portsmouth, a popular ten-mile race, has been scrapped at the last minute. Organisers pulled the plug on the event, set for tomorrow, due to dangerous weather threats.
High Winds and Heavy Rain Force Safety Shutdown
With storms forecast to bring fierce winds and heavy showers to the coast, officials said safety couldn’t be guaranteed. The event’s infrastructure, medical teams, and the course itself are all at risk from gusts and high tides.
In a blunt statement, organisers said: “We’re really sorry to confirm that this year’s Great South Run (10 miles), scheduled for Sunday 20 October, has been cancelled due to the forecasted high winds and rain.”
They added: “The forecasted winds compromise event infrastructure including medical facilities at the finish and around the course. Combined with high tide, potential debris, and the exposed seafront, we can’t guarantee safety. The safety of participants, staff, and volunteers is our number one priority.”
Runners Offered Refunds or Roll-Over Entries
Race organisers apologised for the blow to thousands of participants and promised prompt communication. Emails will be sent out next week explaining options to roll entries into 2025’s race or receive full refunds.
Organisers concluded: “We know how disappointing this is and hope you can understand. Thank you for your patience and understanding.”
