Heathrow Airport Shut Down After Massive Substation Fire

Heathrow Airport has been forced to close for at least 24 hours following a huge fire at a nearby electrical substation. The blaze triggered a major power outage, leaving terminals in darkness and plunging hundreds of thousands of travellers into chaos.

Huge Blaze Hits Electrical Substation Near Heathrow

The fire broke out at around 11:30pm on Thursday at a transformer on Nestles Avenue in Hayes, just 1.5 miles from Heathrow. The london-fire.gov.uk" target="_blank" rel="noopener" title="London Fire Brigade" data-wpil-keyword-link="linked">London Fire Brigade scrambled ten fire engines and over 70 firefighters to tackle the inferno, sending thick black smoke into the night sky. A 200-metre cordon was set up, and roughly 150 residents were evacuated as a precaution.

Assistant Commissioner Pat Goulbourne said: “Firefighters are working tirelessly in challenging conditions to bring the fire under control as swiftly as possible.”

Massive Power Outage and Travel Havoc

The fire has knocked out power to more than 16,300 homes and businesses across Hayes, Hounslow, and neighbouring areas, confirmed Scottish and Southern Electricity Networks (SSEN).

Heathrow Airport announced:

“Heathrow is experiencing a significant power outage due to a large fire at a nearby electrical substation. To maintain safety, the airport will remain closed until 11:59pm on 21 March.”

Train services including the Elizabeth Line and Heathrow Express have been suspended, leaving many stranded. National Rail warns disruption could last all day.

Flights Grounded & Global Impact

Flight tracker Flightradar24 reports over 1,350 flights have been affected by the airport shutdown, with diversions and delays mounting. Data firm Cirium estimates about 145,000 passengers will suffer disruption today alone.

Flightradar24 spokesperson Ian Petchenik said: “This is going to disrupt airline operations all over the world. Heathrow is one of the world’s key aviation hubs.”
