High-Tech Fix for Crumbling Culvert on Victoria Avenue
A cutting-edge rescue mission kicks off next week to save the culvert beneath Victoria Avenue/Shanklin Road. This vital tunnel carries Scotchells Brook under the road and desperately needs strengthening. Island Roads is deploying a clever inflatable resin ‘balloon’ liner to do the job.
Inflatable Resin Balloon to the Rescue
The innovative technique involves pulling a resin-coated balloon liner through the culvert, sealing it at both ends, then inflating it to fit snugly inside. UV lights cure the resin, creating a tough, protective shell that reinforces the original brickwork. Because the brook runs several meters below road level, a special temporary ramp will be built to get the heavy kit and materials in and out.
Island Roads’ Proven Method
Island Roads has already used this tech successfully at several smaller bridges, including Holbrooke’s Bridge in Bouldnor. That site famously hosts the ‘eelevator’ that helps migrating eels. Ian Hodson, Island Roads structures manager, said:
“This is a tricky site because it’s a confined space and deep below the road. But it’s vital we stabilise the culvert to prevent major disruption if it collapses. This is the last of four schemes this year using an innovative, quick solution that extends the life of our infrastructure with minimal disruption.”
Road Closures and What to Expect
- Monday 15 July: Overnight road closure (6pm-6.30am) at the western end of Victoria Avenue for temporary ramp build. Traffic diverted via Lake, Apse Heath, and Canteen Road.
- Wednesday 17 July: Daytime closure (9.30am-9.30pm) while the resin liner is installed. Diversions remain the same.
- Thursday 18 July: Overnight closure (6pm-6.30am) to remove equipment.
Temporary traffic lights will control flow throughout the work.
Ian Hodson added: “We apologise for any inconvenience. We’re doing as much as possible overnight to improve this important, though mostly unseen, part of the Island’s infrastructure.”
