England and Wales Lose Hundreds of Pubs in 2022

A fresh analysis by Altus Group reveals the pub scene in England and Wales shrank by 386 last year. The total count dropped from 40,173 in December 2021 to 39,787 by the end of 2022 — including empty and to-let venues.

Fewer Closures, But Pubs Face Tough Times Ahead

Despite the setbacks, permanent pub closures were down 13.1% compared to 2021, signalling some resilience in the market amid economic chaos. Still, a staggering 50 pubs shut their doors every week throughout last year.

Rising energy bills, soaring food prices, and low customer turnout have battered the trade. The British Beer and Pub Association (BBPA) warned that many pubs have cut opening hours and slimmed down menus in response — with fears of a wave of closures looming unless extra help arrives.

Pubs Disappearing from Communities as Properties Convert

Altus Group’s data also highlights a worrying trend of pubs being demolished or turned into homes and offices. Over the past five years, 2,663 pubs have vanished from towns and villages.

“Many publicans I speak to are worried this could be their last year and really need certainty about future support,” said Ben Nelson of Altus Group.

“With sky-high running costs and wafer-thin profits, pub sites look more attractive for other uses. Continued government backing is vital to protect these local hubs.”

Energy Bill Support to End—What Next for UK Pubs?

The hospitality sector got some relief last year thanks to the Government’s energy bills relief scheme, but that support stops at the end of March. The industry faces an uncertain future while waiting for new announcements on financial aid to tackle soaring energy costs.

As pubs struggle to survive, the clock is ticking for communities desperate to keep their pint-serving locals open and thriving.
