Today Marks International Missing Children’s Day
Every year on May 25, the world comes together to spotlight a heartbreaking crisis: thousands of children go missing globally. International Missing Children’s Day reminds us of the urgent mission to find and bring these youngsters home. It also raises awareness about protecting children from abduction and exploitation, celebrating those who have been safely reunited with their families.
The Tragic Origin of the Day
The day was first observed in 1983 to honour Etan Patz, a six-year-old boy who vanished on his way to school in New York City back in 1979. Originally a US-focused event, it’s now recognised worldwide as a symbol of the ongoing fight to find missing children everywhere. The search continues for countless youngsters who remain lost today.
‘Check Think Report’: New Campaign to Help Parents
This year, AMBER Alert Europe and the European Centre for Missing Children have launched a lifesaving campaign called ‘Check Think Report’. It’s designed to guide parents and carers step-by-step on what to do if a child goes missing.
- Check: Look carefully for any clues or signs of where your child might be.
- Think: Consider reasons for their disappearance and possible locations.
- Report: Contact the police immediately to report your child missing.
Whether your child is a toddler, school-aged, or a teenager, following this straightforward approach can be critical to their safe return.
