Isle of Wight to Scrap St Mary’s Hospital Roundabout in Traffic Shake-Up
The iconic three-lane roundabout near St Mary’s Hospital in Newport is set for the chop. Revised plans, following public feedback, propose replacing it with new traffic lights.
Major Traffic Overhaul in the Cards
The roundabout’s removal is part of a £9 million government-backed project aimed at slashing congestion around Newport. The Isle of Wight Council’s Cabinet will decide on the updated scheme on 13 September.
Local Voices Shape New Plans
“A wide range of views has been taken account of, including from local residents, the hospital, the Isle of Wight College, local councillors and parish councils,” said Councillor Ian Ward, Cabinet member for infrastructure and transport. “As with the initial plan put out for consultation in January, traffic flow data has been used to help identify key issues and the most appropriate solutions.”
What’s Changing?
- Roundabout replaced by signalised junctions on Medina Way and Forest Road
- Measures to cut traffic delays and speed up bus journeys between Cowes and Newport
- New segregated bus lane near Hunnyhill, with relocated bus stops following resident feedback
