Isle of Wight Studio School Faces Closure in 2019 Over Low Pupil Numbers

Ministers at the Department of Education have given the green light in principle to close the Isle of Wight Studio School by August 2019. The decision comes after years of struggling to attract enough students in Years 12 and 13, leaving the school unable to grow as planned.

Why Is the Studio School Shutting?

The school has been operating at just 40% capacity, with a dwindling sixth form intake. This shortage of students has hit Studio Schools nationwide, but here on the Isle, it’s proving terminal. The Inspire Academy Trust, which runs the school, put forward the request to close.

“The IOW Studio School has provided an excellent learning experience for many children on the Island, but without enough sixth form students, it’s not viable to continue long-term,” said Richard Bryant, Finance Officer at Inspire Academy Trust.

What Happens Next for Students?

The closure plan is still provisional and is now entering a four-week “listening period” ending on 22 May. After that, the Department for Education will make the final call together with Inspire Academy Trust.

If closure is confirmed, students set to start in September 2018 will be supported to stay at their current schools or transfer elsewhere. The 120 pupils in Years 10 and 11 will be able to complete their GCSEs on the Island as planned.

“We’re committed to our current pupils,” added Bryant. “Keeping the school open until summer 2019 gives them the stability they need.”

Staff and Headteacher Respond

Head Teacher Richard White expressed his sadness at the news:

“Despite the hard work of staff and governors, our sixth form has never been fully filled. Many students have chosen apprenticeships or colleges off-Island. We support what’s best for the pupils.”

What About Student Destinations?

  • 55% of Year 11s went on to sixth form last year
  • 30% chose further education colleges
  • 12% started apprenticeships

The studio school, which opened in 2014, has consistently helped students into positive next steps.
