Chaos on UK Rails: Landslip Halts Key West Coast Main Line

Tens of thousands of train passengers are facing major travel headaches after a landslip hit one of the UK’s busiest rail routes. The disaster struck between Coventry and Rugby, blocking the vital West Coast Main Line that links London Euston with Birmingham New Street.

Delays and Diversions Hit Avanti and London Northwestern Services

Avanti West Coast and London Northwestern Railway services have been hammered. Passengers face hours of delays, long detours, and replacement buses running between Coventry and Northampton. The landslip forced Network Rail to shut both lines overnight Monday to carry out urgent repairs.

Network Rail Scrambles to Fix Damage

Phil Barnes, Network Rail’s operations director, revealed crews are stripping back vegetation to assess and clear the slipped soil. “We’re removing soil before checking the tracks to get services running again,” he said. “For safety, both lines will stay closed overnight Monday and Tuesday morning. We hope to reopen Tuesday afternoon.”

“Our team is working around the clock to get trains running again as soon as we can,” Barnes added, apologising for the disruption.

Rail Chiefs Urge Passengers to Check Before Travelling

Jonny Wiseman, customer experience director at London Northwestern Railway, thanked travellers for their patience and urged them to check their journey updates before setting off. Avanti’s safety director Dave Whitehouse confirmed normal services will resume once emergency repairs on the West Midlands to London route are complete.

Another Landslip Blow for UK Rail Network

This latest landslip comes just weeks after the Chiltern Main Line was forced to close following similar disruption near Bicester, Oxfordshire. That incident caused chaos between London Marylebone and Birmingham/Oxford, making this a troubling time for Britain’s railways.
