Gas Explosion Tears Through Kingstanding Home
A devastating gas explosion ripped through a house in Kingstanding just after 8:30pm, leaving one woman dead and a man fighting for his life in hospital. The blast destroyed one property and severely damaged several nearby homes and vehicles.
Heroic Rescue Amid Flames and Rubble
Emergency services scrambled to the scene on Dulwich Road after calls came in about the explosion. Firefighters found one house completely destroyed and others badly damaged. Residents didn’t wait for rescue teams—they braved flaming debris and thick dust to drag an injured man from the wreckage.
Everyone was watching, the house was on fire, nobody was going in, so we could see a way in – so we went in the house, me and about a dozen others,” said one witness who declined to give his name.
“The dust from the loft insulation burned around us as we rescued the man from the back of the house.”
The injured man has “very significant” injuries and is in a life-threatening condition at Queen Elizabeth Hospital’s major trauma centre. Four other men were treated for minor injuries and discharged.
Emergency Response and Investigation Underway
West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) confirmed the tragic death of one female victim at the scene. Incident Commander Martin Ward-White said: “It is clear that a gas explosion had occurred. Our thoughts are with everyone affected.”
West Midlands Police discovered up to six houses damaged by the blast, with some properties partially destroyed on both sides of the street. Multiple fire crews, ambulances, hazardous area teams, and a National Inter-Agency Liaison Officer responded quickly to the emergency.
Cadent Gas teams are on site assisting with the gas emergency. “It is premature to speculate on the cause,” a Cadent spokesperson said. They urged anyone smelling gas anywhere to call 0800 111 999 immediately.
Road Closures and Public Warning
Dulwich Road and surrounding streets remain closed as investigations continue. Local councillor Rick Payne described hearing the “massive explosion” and confirming it was likely a gas blast.
Authorities are asking people to avoid the area while emergency teams work to secure the scene. More updates will follow as the situation develops.
