Christmas Cheer: ULEZ Charge Axed for One Day
Mayor Sadiq Khan is giving London drivers a festive break. The £12.50 Ultra Low Emission Zone (ULEZ) charge will be suspended for Christmas Day only. Since August 29, drivers with non-compliant vehicles in Greater London have had to cough up daily. But on December 25, that fee takes a holiday.
Who Benefits? Families Driving Older Cars
This Christmas Day break also applies to the Congestion Charge. It’s aimed at easing travel for families visiting loved ones. Most winners will be those behind the wheel of pre-2005 petrol or pre-2015 diesel motors.
But Watch the Clock!
Transport for London (TfL) warns: the charges snap back at midnight. If you’re still cruising past 12 am, you’ll be hit with the ULEZ fee. So, don’t push your luck on the late-night drive home.
The Low Emission Zone Still Runs
Heads-up: The Low Emission Zone (LEZ) is on all year — including Christmas. So, heavy diesel vehicles still face charges on the big day.
“The ULEZ operates 24 hours a day, every day of the year, except Christmas Day. If you drive within the ULEZ area across two days, for example before and after midnight, you need to pay two daily charges,” said Transport for London.
Khan Stands Firm Despite Criticism
Mayor Khan recently faced backlash over expanding ULEZ to all London boroughs. But he defended the move, saying clean air is a basic right. “Breathing clean air is as important as drinking clean water. It’s a right, not a privilege,” he insisted. Health benefits have already been seen in central and inner London.
This one-day ULEZ holiday is a seasonal olive branch — helping Londoners enjoy the festive season and family time without extra fees.
