M27 Shut Overnight After Smash Spills Fuel – Emergency Roadworks Underway
The M27 eastbound is set to stay closed overnight after a serious crash triggered a massive fuel spill and urgent road repairs.
Crash Chaos at Fareham to Portsmouth
Police shut the M27 between Junction 11 (Fareham North) and Junction 12 (Portsmouth North/M275) early this morning. A collision between an HGV and a private car caused the shutdown.
Emergency crews rushed to the scene to tackle the fuel spillage and recover the vehicles. Authorities warned drivers to expect delays as the closure is expected to last for hours – possibly until lunchtime at first.
Diversions and Long Delays
- Eastbound drivers must exit at J11.
- Follow the ‘Hollow Circle’ diversion symbol.
- Take the 3rd exit onto the A27, passing through Portchester and Portsbridge Interchange.
- Re-join the M27 at J12.
Motorists are urged to plan ahead and consider alternative routes. The fuel spill damaged the road so badly that the Highways Agency confirmed overnight resurfacing work is needed.
Emergency Resurfacing Work to Keep Road Closed
At 11:10am, officials announced the spill had seriously affected the carriageway, requiring a full resurfacing that would take several hours.
By 1:30am, Highways England confirmed the closure will continue overnight while emergency repairs are carried out to make the road safe again.
