Major Portsmouth Road Closure Hits Eastern Road This Weekend

Motorists brace yourselves! Portsmouth’s Eastern Road is set for a major northbound closure this weekend as crucial maintenance work ramps up. The shutdown will hit hard between Anchorage Road and the A27 from 7.30pm Saturday until 3pm Sunday.

Full Northbound Closure Causes Chaos

The northbound lanes will be completely shut to allow essential repairs to the bridge spanning the creek. While maintenance usually happens overnight, the scale of this job means the road must close during the day.

Expect Delays & Plan Your Route Now

  • Diversions are in place via Norway Road and London Road.
  • Drivers should plan ahead and allow extra travel time.
  • Where possible, avoid Eastern Road altogether and use alternative routes like the M275 to exit the city.

Cyclists and Pedestrians Unaffected

Good news for walkers and cyclists – pavements and cycleways remain open as usual during the closure.

Steve White, Operations Manager at Colas, said:

“This work is part of our ongoing maintenance for the bridge and, as always, we are doing everything we can to minimise disruption to residents and drivers. During the work, drivers should avoid the Eastern Road where possible and use other routes. People should plan their journeys and expect some delays. We are very sorry for the inconvenience and disruption this will cause people and grateful for their patience and co-operation.”

The timing was chosen carefully to dodge school holidays and Fratton Park football traffic, with the closure starting only after the fans have left. But drivers, prepare for snarls and set off earlier if you can!
