King Alfred Pools Locked Down Until Easter After Boiler Breakdown
Bad news for Brighton swimmers! The King Alfred Leisure Centre’s pools will stay shut until Easter after a major boiler breakdown. The 40-year-old heating system and control panel have packed up, forcing the closure.
What’s Happening with the Repairs?
- Brighton and Hove Council confirmed the pools closed earlier this month when the heating and hot water failed.
- Specialist contractors found serious issues that need big repairs, including replacing building controls and fixing boilers.
- Freedom Leisure, which runs the centre, is working with the council to fix the problem urgently.
Pool Users Left in the Lurch
Freedom Leisure is contacting members to offer options for suspensions and relocating swimming lessons. Meanwhile, the gym, sports halls, studios, and ballroom remain open as normal.
Darryl Keech, Brighton and Hove Area Manager for Freedom Leisure, said: “We are very disappointed that we are not able to open the pool due to this technical failure. We want to reassure customers we’re doing everything we can to fix the boiler system and its controls. Our goal is to heat the water and get the pool open as soon as possible to provide the service the community deserves.”
King Alfred’s Age Is Catching Up
The building’s age is causing more maintenance headaches, but it’s still a popular spot. Freedom Leisure and council officers are pushing to keep it open until a new King Alfred/West Hub can be built.
For now, swimmers will have to wait and watch updates as repairs get underway. Hopefully, the pools will be back in action by Easter – fingers crossed!
