Man Rescued from Smoke-Filled Flat in Ramsgate
A man was rushed to hospital after firefighters found him trapped in a smoke-choked flat in Ramsgate, Kent. Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) sprang into action after receiving reports of thick smoke billowing from a property on King Street.
Firefighters Race to Scene
Two fire engines arrived promptly, with crews donning breathing apparatus to enter the flat. They found a man struggling with smoke inhalation and quickly led him to safety. Thankfully, no fire had broken out – the smoke was caused by a cooker left on, filling the flat with dense smoke.
KFRS Warns: Don’t Get Distracted When Cooking
Leanne McMahon, Group Manager for Community Safety, warned: “Over half of all fires we attend start in the kitchen, mostly due to unattended cooking, grease build-up, or household items left on the hob.”
Simple Tips to Avoid Kitchen Disasters
- Always keep an eye on your cooking and switch off the hob if you leave the room.
- Use timers to remind you when food is ready.
- Plan meals ahead to avoid last-minute rushes and distractions.
- Never place household items like towels or baskets on your cooker.
- Keep cooker, grill, and oven clean to prevent grease fires.
- Keep children and pets away from cooking areas.
- Turn off electric cookers, toasters, and microwaves at the mains after use.
- Fit smoke alarms on every floor and test weekly for early warnings.
This close call is a stark reminder to stay alert while cooking. Don’t let distractions cost you safety – a little caution goes a long way!
