Queen’s coffin to lie in state at Westminster – here’s how to pay your respects

Her Majesty The Queen’s closed coffin will rest on a raised platform called a catafalque inside Westminster Hall, Palace of Westminster. The public will be allowed to file past and pay their respects during the Lying-in-State period.
When and where you can visit
The Lying-in-State opens Wednesday 14 September at 5pm. It will stay open around the clock, closing at 6.30am on Monday 19 September. Visitors can come anytime within these dates to honour the late monarch.
Watch live or visit in person – but be prepared
- BBC’s red button service will stream live coverage from Westminster Hall.
- ITV and Sky TVs will run extensive broadcasts.
- An online book of condolence is available for personal messages.
If you’re planning to attend in person, be warned – expect long queues, potentially waiting for hours or even overnight on your feet, as the line keeps moving slowly without many chances to sit down.

All visitors must pass airport-style security checks. Only small bags are allowed inside, so pack light.
