Mobile Phone Crackdown Hits UK Roads
From Tuesday 15 February to Thursday 17 February, police launched a tough operation targeting drivers caught using mobile phones on key strategic roads across Oxfordshire, Hampshire, and Berkshire.
Bus-Borne Cops Nab Distracted Drivers
Thanks to a Stagecoach-donated bus, officers covertly spotted motorists using their phones or driving recklessly. Once identified, nearby units swooped in to pull offenders over.
Scores of Drivers Caught Over Three Days
- Tuesday (Oxford roads A40 & A34): 10 drivers stopped for mobile phone use, 4 for poor vehicle control.
- Wednesday (A34, A303, M27, M3, A31): 10 caught on phones, 3 for insecure loads, 2 for poor control.
- Thursday (same routes): 14 mobile phone users stopped, 6 for unsecured loads, 3 for losing control.
Police Warn: Mobile Use Quadruples Crash Risk
“While most drivers are safe, a stubborn few risk lives by using phones behind the wheel,” said Sergeant Dave Hazlett of the Joint Operations Roads Policing Unit. “Research shows mobile distractions make you four times more likely to crash and less able to spot hazards in time.”
He added: “Big thanks to Stagecoach and National Highways for their support in this vital crackdown.”
