Flood Threat Lingers After Storm Babet Hits UK
Storm Babet’s fury may have eased, but don’t put your feet up just yet. As of 6pm Friday 27 October, England is facing a serious flood risk with 16 flood warnings and 75 flood alerts in place – and this number is set to climb over the weekend.
South West Brace for Coastal Chaos
Big waves and spring tides threaten coastal and tidal flooding in the south west. The Environment Agency (EA) has already protected around 96,000 properties using 20 high volume pumps and five smaller pumps across several hotspots. Their flood warning service fired out over 300,000 alerts during the storm.
Flood Damage and Tragedy
Sadly, the cost has been grim. More than 2,100 properties have been flooded and several deaths have been reported. Officials vow to investigate whether better protection could have prevented some of the damage.
Ongoing Risk Across South East England
Heavy rain this weekend means severe river and surface flooding could strike parts of South East England, though it’s not expected. Coastal flooding remains a threat along the south coast thanks to those pounding waves.
Dan Bond, Flood Duty Manager at the Environment Agency, said:
“Flood defences and our staff efforts have protected nearly 100,000 properties during Storm Babet, but sadly 2,146 properties still flooded. The risk is not over. We expect minor flooding in the South West from large waves and spring tides Saturday. Heavy rainfall may cause river and surface flooding in the South East over the weekend. We urge everyone to stay safe: avoid coastal paths, keep away from swollen rivers, and never drive through flood water – just 30cm can sweep your car away.”
