Fugitive on the Run for 21 Years Nabbed in South Africa
A British conman who vanished for over two decades has finally been caught — thousands of miles away in South Africa.
Fraudster Pyatt Flees UK, Evades Police for 21 Years
Brandon William Pyatt, 64, was sentenced to five years in prison back in 1998 for a string of fraud and deception offences committed in the north west of England. But during his trial at Chester Crown Court, Pyatt skipped bail and disappeared, sparking a relentless international manhunt.
Originally from Droylsden, Manchester, Pyatt fled the UK and assumed multiple false identities, managing to stay off the radar for 21 long years.
National Crime Agency Team Up with South African Police
Pyatt’s luck finally ran out last week when officers from the South African Police Service swooped in Pretoria. Their operation was led by information sharing with the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA), aimed at catching fugitives still posing a threat to communities.
The NCA’s Ian Cruxton praised the joint efforts: “No matter how far fugitives travel, or how long it takes, we will never give up. Our reach is global.”
New Charges in South Africa, Extradition Looms
Pyatt now faces fraud and theft charges related to offences allegedly committed in South Africa. He appeared in court in Durban yesterday, with local cases set to be resolved before extradition to the UK.
NCA officer Danny Murphy, who worked on Pyatt’s original investigation, said: “His capture brings me great personal satisfaction. We never gave up. The victims deserve closure, and now they can finally see justice served.”
Victims Suffered Tens of Thousands in Losses
- Pyatt’s fraud centred on a vehicle leasing firm in the 1990s.
- Victims faced severe financial hits, losing livelihoods and businesses.
- His crimes caused long-lasting damage across the north west of England.
The NCA and South African Police continue to track down fugitives, showing that even decades on, justice can catch up with crooks wherever they hide.
