Christmas Rail Chaos: No Trains At London Liverpool Street Until New Year
Passengers face major rail disruption over Christmas and New Year, with no trains running into or out of London Liverpool Street station from 25 December to 2 January, Network Rail has confirmed. Travellers are urged to plan ahead to avoid chaos.
Key Routes Hit Amid Christmas Engineering Works
Network Rail says most engineering work is scheduled during low-traffic times like Christmas Day, Boxing Day, and overnight. Despite this, some important routes will be badly affected:
- London Liverpool Street shutdown: All services, including Greater Anglia, Stansted Express, and Cambridge trains, will stop running at Liverpool Street from 25 December until 2 January.
- Reduced Atlantic services: Long-distance trains from London Euston to Manchester Piccadilly, Birmingham New Street, Liverpool Lime Street, Blackpool North, Scotland, and Glasgow Central will run on a reduced timetable between 24 and 30 December.
- No Southern or Gatwick Express trains: Services to and from London Victoria will be suspended from 25 December to 2 January.
- Cannon Street station closure: Closed on 24 December, with some trains starting or ending at London Bridge instead.
- Lewisham shutdown: Closed on Christmas Eve, plus no trains between New Cross, St Johns, and Dartford via Bexleyheath.
Strike Threats Add to the Mayhem
Union chiefs warn of possible rail strikes leading up to Christmas, which could further disrupt services. Network Rail says 95% of the network will remain open, but key routes will feel the pinch.
Travellers are urged to check before travelling to avoid getting stranded during the festive rush.
