Chaos on the Thames: Man Jumps from Blackfriars Bridge with Faulty Parachute
A major emergency rippled through London’s River Thames tonight after a man leapt from Blackfriars Bridge with a parachute that spectacularly failed to open. The dramatic plunge sparked a huge search and rescue operation along the river.
Emergency Services Scramble to the Scene
Police, London Fire Brigade, RNLI lifeboats, and ambulance crews raced to the river at around 6:40pm near 1 Bridge, SE1. Witnesses reported seeing the parachute malfunction just after the jump, forcing the man into the Thames below. The stretch of water between Blackfriars and Waterloo Bridges is now swarming with rescue boats, drones, and divers battling tricky river conditions to find the victim.
Onlookers Watch Tense Search at Westminster Bridge
Crowds gathered anxiously as police blocked off parts of the embankment. Emergency crews used the area near Westminster Bridge as their base. A London Fire Brigade source told us: “We’re supporting colleagues in an ongoing river incident following reports of a person entering the Thames with a parachute that did not deploy. Specialist crews are assisting with the search.”
Identity and Fate Still Unknown
Authorities have yet to confirm who the jumper was or their condition. It’s unclear if this was a daredevil stunt gone horribly wrong, a suicide attempt, or some other tragedy. Specialist urban search and river rescue teams remain on the scene, combing the water and surrounding areas.
Police Urge Witnesses to Speak Up
The Metropolitan Police have launched an appeal for anyone who saw the jump or has footage to get in touch. A Met spokesman said:
“Emergency services are currently responding to a concern for safety close to Blackfriars Bridge. This follows reports of a man entering the water at around 18:31hrs on Thursday, 19 June. Emergency services remain on scene.”
Witnesses or anyone with information are urged to call 101 immediately.
