UK Coastguard Warns Parents After 94 Kids Go Missing on May Bank Holiday Beaches
The UK Coastguard has issued a stark warning to parents ahead of this weekend’s beach visits. Over the recent May Bank Holiday (5-7 May), they responded to a staggering 94 reports of missing children along the UK coastline.
Hot Weather Sparks Surge in Missing Children Reports
The busiest hotspots for disappearances were Wittering in West Sussex and Formby Beach in Merseyside, each reporting 13 missing kids. Luckily, every child was found safe. But with so many disappearances, Coastguard teams have ramped up patrols and are staying alert near beaches in case more incidents occur.
David Jones, UK Coastguard Duty Controller, said: “Due to the recent heatwave, our HM Coastguard Operations Centres were flooded with 999 calls about missing children on beaches nationwide.”
Parents Urged to Stay Vigilant and Use Beach Safety Tips
Jones added: “It’s a huge worry when kids go missing near water. Even shallow water and slippery rocks can pose serious dangers. Thankfully, most children had simply wandered off. But chasing hundreds of missing children reports ties up vital rescue resources.”
The Coastguard is urging parents to keep close tabs on their kids at the beach. Here’s top advice for families planning seaside fun:
- Choose beaches with lifeguards on duty.
- Set a clear, easy-to-find meeting point.
- Show kids where the nearest lifeguard station or landmark is.
- Use local wristband ID schemes if available — they help reunite lost children faster.
- Immediately inform the Coastguard or lifeguards if a child goes missing.
Don’t Delay if Your Child Goes Missing
Beach crowds can quickly confuse and disorient children. The Coastguard stresses the importance of acting fast. The sooner authorities are alerted, the better the chances of a quick, safe reunion.
So remember: Keep your kids close, know where they are at all times, and make safety your number one priority on the beach this weekend.
