Fire Breaks Out in Disused Newbury Sports Bar, Bartholomew Street Shut
Bartholomew Street in Newbury has been sealed off tonight after a fire tore through a long-empty sports bar. The blaze erupted just after 5pm, sending thick smoke plumes across the street and causing chaos in the town centre.
Flames Rage Through Abandoned Bar Sport
The fire broke out in a disused building once home to the Bar Sport, believed to have been shelter for homeless people lately. Fortunately, no one was inside at the time, and no injuries have been reported.
Massive Fire Response Slams Into Scene
- Fire crews from Royal Berkshire, Hampshire, and Oxfordshire rushed to the blaze.
- Multiple teams donned breathing apparatus and battled the fire with hose reels.
- Additional crews from Kingsclere and nearby stations deployed to contain the flames.
Investigation Underway as Traffic Jams Mount
A spokesman for Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service said:
“We received the call just after 5pm. Several appliances were immediately sent to the scene from local and surrounding areas. The fire has now been brought under control, and an investigation is ongoing to determine how it started.”
Meanwhile, drivers struggled to navigate the snarled traffic as Bartholomew Street remained closed in both directions, causing delays throughout Newbury’s town centre.
