Scandal Alert: Met Police Accused of Using Indian Hackers to Spy on Journalists & Activists
The Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC) is launching a probe into explosive claims that the Metropolitan Police’s National Domestic Extremism and Disorder Intelligence Unit (NDEDIU) tapped into email accounts of journalists and environmental campaigners via hackers based in India.
Allegations of Illegal Email Hacking
The investigation kicked off after the IPCC received a letter accusing NDEDIU officers of recruiting computer hackers through contacts in India. These hackers allegedly broke into the emails of key figures from political and environmental pressure groups.
It’s claimed journalists’ emails were also targeted. The IPCC is eager to hear from the whistleblower — believed to be a serving or retired officer — or any police staff with knowledge of these serious claims.
IPCC Seeks Whistleblowers to Come Forward
Those with information can contact the IPCC confidentially via:

- Phone: 08458 770 061
The investigation is examining whether NDEDIU officers worked with Indian counterparts to hire hackers and if any illegally obtained data was used inside the unit.
Serious Allegations Demand Thorough Probe
IPCC Deputy Chair Sarah 1 said: “These are clearly serious allegations and the IPCC is conducting a comprehensive investigation into the matters raised. This will be a complex investigation given the potential involvement of foreign participants.”
She added: “We would like to hear from the officer who brought these allegations to light or any other officers or police staff who may be able to provide information of use to the IPCC investigation.”
The IPCC is also juggling two related probes into document shredding linked to undercover policing.
