Portsmouth Lad’s 11th Birthday Bash Smashes Records with 30,000 Cards!
An autistic boy from Portsmouth has turned heartbreak into a heartwarming celebration after his mum’s viral plea sparked a global outpouring of love.
From Empty Party to World-Famous Birthday
Lisa Jackson’s 11-year-old son, Ben, faced a crushing moment when none of the 25 kids invited to his 9th birthday turned up. But this year? Over 30,000 cards flooded in from every corner of the globe, transforming his big day into the “best birthday ever.”
The Royal Mail in Portsmouth was swamped, setting up special trolleys just to handle the mountain of cards and gifts. Lisa recalled Ben’s reaction when a van full of post arrived at their door: “His eyes were as wide as saucers, his mouth wide open.”
Ben beamed as he opened birthday wishes from Australia, the USA, South Africa, India and Singapore. He said: “I will always remember this birthday. My other birthday was awful. This one is the best ever. I could not believe my eyes at all the cards. Thank you everyone.”
Epic Birthday Treats Light Up Ben’s Day
- Birthday breakfast? Leftover pizza after a generous food donation.
- Local firms treated Ben to free trampolining and a bouncy castle.
- Stormtroopers from Star Wars and motorbike groups roared up to join the open-air bash on a common.
- The police played along, ‘arresting’ Ben on suspicion of cake theft before fingerprinting him at Waterlooville police station. Ben even got to try on riot gear and take a spin in a patrol car.
- Southsea Fire Station hosted Ben for a hands-on visit with fire engines and gear.
- The 47th Regiment Royal Artillery sent a special plaque, plus a Premier League football from Portsmouth FC’s community team.
- Loads of birthday gifts poured in, including a TV, PlayStation and iPad.
Birthday Weekend Fun Rolls On
The celebrations continued with an exclusive early visit to a local toy shop and a community group’s second birthday party. Lisa shared: “This is a birthday Ben will never forget – but for all the right reasons this time.”
She added the response has been a huge confidence boost for Ben, who reads each card with joy. “We’ll have to donate some gifts to charity because we’ve got too many,” she laughed.
Mum’s Viral Appeal Raises Autism Awareness
Lisa’s original Facebook post has been shared over 45,000 times, sparking heartfelt support nationwide. She revealed the devastation Ben felt on his 9th birthday lookout, asking repeatedly, “They will come in a minute, won’t they mum?”
“By 2.30pm he was visibly upset, and it was obvious no one was coming. It was the most heartbreaking moment for both of us. This affected his confidence and anxiety for a long time.”
Lisa hopes the overwhelming kindness will shine a light on the struggles autistic children face. “Ben usually isn’t emotional because of his condition, but he cried when he saw all the support. I couldn’t cuddle my own child at that moment. It’s heartbreaking,” she said.
Her message to the public: “I thought maybe a few hundred cards would come. This has gone completely crazy. I hope it raises awareness, changes attitudes, and helps autistic kids like Ben feel loved.”
