Rail Strikes Set to Bring Chaos as Workers Demand Pay Rise

Britain is bracing for major rail chaos as RMT union members at Network Rail and 14 train operators prepare for two 48-hour walkouts on Tuesday and Thursday. Aslef drivers will strike on Thursday too. Passengers face “significant disruptions” with barely any trains running.

Workers Bite Back Against Crushing Costs

Surging inflation and a decade of stagnant wages have pushed workers to breaking point. Many struggle to make ends meet as soaring living costs bite hard. Beyond pay, staff fear looming job cuts to maintenance teams, threatening safety for passengers and rail workers alike.

Winter of Discontent 2.0 Looms

The government insists it cannot match inflation with pay rises, dashing hopes of a quick fix. Inflation hit 10.7% in November, the highest in 40 years, sparking strikes across the public sector. Nurses, airport staff, postal workers—and soon Scottish teachers—have joined the industrial action wave.

A recent YouGov poll shows two-thirds of Brits back the nurses’ strike, highlighting public sympathy for workers battling sky-high living costs.

Talks Stall as Unions and Government Trade Blows

Transport Secretary Mark Harper wants a swift resolution but admits progress is slow. Two unions have accepted a “fair and reasonable” offer, but RMT knocked back Network Rail’s proposed 5% pay rise in 2022 and 4% in 2023.

“I am sure we can reach a settlement. But we are only going to do it if we get both sides around the table,” Harper said.

Meanwhile, Rail Magazine’s Nigel Harris warns of widespread disinformation from both sides. He called claims around driver-only trains—a hot-button issue flagged by RMT boss Mick Lynch—a “complete red herring,” saying years of training and new equipment would be needed.

“Nobody is telling the full truth, there is so much disinformation on both sides. It’s hard to see where we get through this,” Harris told Sky News.

Lynch remains cautiously optimistic a deal is possible “in the next few days.” But he demands an agreement that “addresses all of the issues” or warns his union could ballot members for fresh strike action.

He accused the government of wrecking a deal by adding last-minute clauses around driver-only operations, escalating tensions just as talks near a critical stage.
