Shock ripples through UK athletics as Robbie Fitzgibbon, a rising British middle-distance runner and beloved Brighton Phoenix club member, has died at just 28 years old. His sudden passing on October 7, 2024, has left the athletics world in mourning.
From Junior Talent to British Athletics Star
Born on March 23, 1996, Fitzgibbon’s love for running began early. Joining the Brighton Phoenix as a junior, he ran his first race aged 12 at the Goodwood Cross Country in 2008. His commitment and grit quickly pushed him up the ranks of British athletics.
- Set a personal best of 3:36 in the 1500m at an international meet in the Netherlands, 2017

Champion on and off the Track
In recent years, Robbie shifted focus from track to cross-country and road racing, remaining a driving force in Brighton Phoenix’s distance team. Known for his relentless work ethic and team spirit, he was the backbone of the club’s running family.

Honouring a Legacy
Brighton Phoenix chairman Mike Townley and vice-chair Josh Guilmant paid tribute, saying: “Robbie was not just an athlete to us; he was a friend, a teammate, and an irreplaceable part of our Phoenix family.”
Before his death, Robbie was preparing to run the 2025 Brighton Marathon to raise funds for Mind, the mental health charity. In a heartfelt gesture, his father Robin will now run in his son’s place, keeping his legacy alive.
