Helicopter Carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi Crashes Near Azerbaijan Border
Rescue Crews Reach Wreckage After Long Wait
Rescue teams have finally reached the crash site of the helicopter carrying Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi near the Azerbaijan border. The discovery came over 12 hours after the aircraft went missing, fueling fears for the president and all on board.
“We can see the wreckage, and the situation does not look good,” said Pirhossein Kolivand, head of Iran’s Red Crescent, on state TV. The crash site was located in the village of Tavil, a remote mountainous area with difficult access.
Massive Search Effort Underway
The Iranian Red Crescent confirmed that around 73 search and rescue teams, including detector dogs, are combing the rugged terrain. Russia has stepped in, sending a 50-man specialist mountain rescue unit to assist, according to the Russian Ministry of Emergency Situations.
Drone footage released by Turkish authorities showed a fire in the wilderness, believed to be the wreckage, about 12 miles south of the Azerbaijan-Iran border on a steep mountainside.
Fears for Raisi’s Life Grow
President Raisi’s life, along with that of Foreign Minister Hossein Amir-Abdollahian and several high-ranking officials, is reportedly “at risk.” The helicopter, part of a three-aircraft convoy, encountered heavy fog before the crash.
Others on board included Eastern Azerbaijan Governor Malek Rahmati, Tabriz’s Friday prayer Imam Mohammad Ali Alehashem, pilot, copilot, the head of security, and additional crew members.
Some members of the president’s entourage are said to have been able to communicate after the crash, offering a glimmer of hope amid the tragedy.
Global Reactions and Rising Tensions
The incident has sent shockwaves worldwide, particularly given Iran’s pivotal role in Middle East politics and its ties to groups like Hamas. President Joe Biden has been briefed, with the US monitoring the situation closely.
Iraq offered assistance in search and rescue efforts, while Azerbaijan’s President Ilham Aliyev expressed his prayers and solidarity online.
Meanwhile, Russian state media have floated conspiracy theories blaming Western powers, though no evidence supports these claims.
What’s Next for Iran?
Raisi was considered a leading contender to succeed the aging Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei. His potential death could trigger significant instability within the Iranian regime and the wider region.
As rescue operations continue, the world watches anxiously for news on President Raisi’s fate and the fallout from this devastating crash.
