Kyiv Under Siege: Russian Drone Attacks Rock Capital for Third Night

Kyiv faced a brutal night as Ukrainian air defences battled relentless Russian drone strikes for the third evening running. The attacks left one person dead and four wounded across the city. Ukraine’s air force spokesperson, Yuriy Ignat, confirmed 20 Russian attack drones and two cruise missiles were shot down in the early hours of Thursday.

Air Defences Shoot Down 20 Drones and Missiles

“We have carried out a successful air defence operation,” declared Ignat. “All twenty Shahid drones were destroyed, and two Kalibr cruise missiles were also neutralised.”

Emergency responders rushed to multiple Kyiv districts—Solomyanskyi, Shevchenkivskyi, Podilskyi, and Darnytskyi—after reports of explosions. Mayor Vitali Klitschko confirmed a fatality after firefighters found a body in a Podilskyi apartment block.

“In the Podilskyi district, during the firefighting operation, the body of one deceased person was found,” Klitschko shared on Telegram.

Debris Hits City—Buildings Damaged, Residents Injured

The Kyiv military administration reported falling drone debris battered the city centre’s Solomyanskyi district, injuring at least two people. Official photos showed a high-rise room with a shattered wall caused by the strike. Klitschko added damage to a residential building in Darnytskyi and a balcony fire in Shevchenkivskyi were sparked by drone wreckage.

“This night, Russian terrorists once again launched a mass attack. The enemy targeted the Kyiv region with drones and missiles. The air alert lasted for over three hours,” said Ruslan Kravchenko, Kyiv region governor.

Serhiy Popko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, described the assault as a “mass attack” with multiple Iranian-made Shahed drones coming from all directions. Falling debris caused two more injuries in Darnytskyi.

Wider Strikes Across Ukraine

Explosions also rocked Khmelnytskyi in the west, Mykolaiv in the south, and Zaporizhia in the southeast. In Mykolaiv, Ukrainian forces shot down a Kalibr missile along with several drones, but debris damaged a school and roughly ten private homes. No casualties were reported outside Kyiv.

Before this attack, Ukraine’s air defences had intercepted 11 of at least 15 Shahed drones launched the previous night by Russia. On Tuesday, Russia launched 28 Shahed drones across Kyiv and other targets, with Ukraine claiming 26 were destroyed.

Drone Onslaught amid NATO Summit

This weekend’s relentless aerial bombardment coincided with a NATO summit in Lithuania, attended by world leaders and President Zelenskyy. While Ukraine didn’t secure a formal date for NATO membership, Zelenskyy said the meeting laid “a foundation of security” for his country—one of the biggest moves since independence.
