Violence Erupts at Poland-Belarus Border as Migrants Clash with Guards

Chaos broke out at the Poland-Belarus border as migrants hurled objects at Polish Border Guards, sparking a fierce response. Poland’s border agency confirmed it used water cannons to control “aggressive foreigners.”

One Polish police officer was seriously hurt in the fracas, with authorities blaming Belarus for inciting the attack. A police tweet blasted: “Unfortunately, as a result of an attack by people inspired by the Belarusian side, a police officer has been seriously injured.”

Calls for Calm and Aid Amid Escalating Tensions

Dunja Mijatovic, the Council of Europe’s human rights commissioner, urged de-escalation and demanded aid workers and journalists get access to the troubled border zone.

“We need to step aside and think what is happening at the European border, why are these people left in limbo and what can be done to stop this extremely dangerous situation,” she said. She condemned Belarus’s role, calling their tactic of ferrying refugees to the border “absolutely unacceptable.”

Russia and NATO Weigh In on Border Crisis

Poland’s crackdown has drawn fire from Russia, with Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov branding Warsaw’s force “absolutely unacceptable.” Meanwhile, Belarus’s Alexander Lukashenko reportedly conferred with Vladimir Putin about the worsening humanitarian situation.

NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg backed Poland, slamming Lukashenko’s manoeuvre as a “hybrid tactic” using migrants against other countries. “We stand in solidarity with Poland and other affected allies,” Stoltenberg declared.

EU Targets Lukashenko’s Regime with Fresh Sanctions

The European Union slammed the Belarus regime for orchestrating the crisis. In response, Brussels agreed on a new, tougher sanctions regime aimed at crippling Lukashenko’s efforts to weaponise migration.
