RMT Workers Threaten More Strikes at Eurostar Over Pay Battle
Mitie’s Rail, Maritime and Transport (RMT) union members were set to walk out this Friday and Sunday at Eurostar’s London St Pancras terminal. The reason? A bitter pay dispute with their employer, Mitie. With talks still ongoing, the threat of further strike action looms if no deal is reached by next week.
Union Suspends Strikes, But Only Temporarily
An RMT spokesperson confirmed: “The union suspended scheduled strikes this week to allow Mitie security members to participate in a referendum on the latest company offer, which will be concluded on December 19.” However, the union warned that strikes are still planned for December 22 and 23 if talks fail.
Over 100 Security Staff Set to Walk Out
More than 100 security personnel employed by Mitie at Eurostar’s busy London hub were due to strike. Mitie insists the dispute involves only their contract staff, not any of their direct employees.
Pay Disputes Rock UK Workplaces Amid Cost of Living Crisis
- Workers across industries—paramedics, nurses, baggage handlers, postal staff—are demanding pay rises as inflation bites.
- Employers including rail companies and Royal Mail say the pandemic’s impact means services need modernising, urging caution on wages.
The coming weeks could see more disruption on UK transport networks if pay deadlocks aren’t broken soon.
