Sellafield Ramps Up Covid-19 Measures to Keep Nuclear Site Safe

Since the global Covid-19 outbreak, Sellafield’s business continuity teams have been on high alert. They’re ready for anything – from a handful of cases at the site to a full-blown outbreak. The man in charge? Mark Neate, director of environment, safety and security.

Sharp Response Keeps Site Locked Down

Mark Neate said: “Our approach is clear. We’ve set up dedicated teams to handle the ongoing situation while still controlling and managing Sellafield’s nuclear facilities safely.”

Staff at Sellafield are sticking to government and NHS rules on self-isolation and social distancing. Mark added: “We’ve planned for remote working, but with so many employees, it’s no easy feat. Where home-working is possible, line managers are overseeing it.”

But many roles at Sellafield can’t be done from home. The site has a critical mission – keeping workers, the public, and the environment safe.

“I want to thank everyone who’s stepped up. Those working long shifts or covering extra hours are keeping Sellafield safe and secure.”

Controlled Shutdown of Aged Reprocessing Plant

With safety front and centre, Sellafield has taken the precautionary step of a controlled shutdown of the Magnox Reprocessing Plant – a chemical facility nearly 60 years old that processes plutonium and uranium.

Mark explained: “Switching it off quickly due to fewer staff could cause costly maintenance issues. A controlled shutdown keeps the plant in top shape for a smooth restart.”

Extra Safety Steps on Site

  • Easier site access for essential workers
  • Enhanced cleaning in busy areas and offices
  • Canteen changes to ensure social distancing
  • A dedicated helpline and email for staff questions and support

Sellafield continues to put safety first with these strong measures, aiming to protect both its workforce and the wider public during the Covid-19 crisis.
