Thunderstorms Batter England and Wales: Travel Chaos and Flood Fears
Parts of England and Wales are under severe weather alerts today as thunderstorms bring fierce winds, heavy rain, and frequent lightning. The Met Office has issued multiple warnings covering major cities from Birmingham to London and Cardiff.
Heavy Rain and Flash Flood Risks
The first warning runs from noon to 8pm, with rainfall expected to hit up to 40mm (1.5 inches) in just three hours. This raises the threat of sudden flash flooding across vulnerable areas. Motorists are urged to be extra cautious on wet roads, with spray, standing water, and hail making driving conditions dangerous.
Lightning Strikes and Power Cut Concerns
Lightning could cause structural damage to homes and buildings. Residents in affected regions should brace for possible power outages and train service delays as storms roar through.
More Stormy Weather on Saturday
A second, more intense weather warning kicks in from 1am Saturday, lasting nearly 24 hours. This alert covers a larger swathe including all of Wales, Cornwall, and as far north as Liverpool. The Met Office warns of relentless lightning, strong gusts, and heavy showers.
Met Office advice: “Stay indoors and avoid exposed spots like beaches, parks and open fields to stay safe.”
