Chaos erupted in Woolwich, SE London, when a colossal 7-metre-deep sinkhole yawned open on St Mary Street. The gaping hole, caused by a burst water main, forced the immediate evacuation of three homes.
Fire Brigade Race to the Rescue
The London Fire Brigade sprang into action after receiving the call at 9:30pm on Tuesday. About 15 firefighters and three fire engines descended on the scene, evacuating 11 people. They quickly set up a 25-metre safety cordon to keep the public clear. Thankfully, no injuries have been reported.
Street Shut, Danger Contained
The sinkhole stretched 7 metres deep, 10 metres long, and 3 metres wide, posing a grave threat. Authorities shut down St Mary Street between Sunbury Street and Kingsman Street while emergency teams secured the area. The fire brigade declared the scene safe just before 1am and withdrew after ensuring no immediate risks remained.
