South West Water has been hit with a health scare in Brixham after cryptosporidium was found in the local water supply. The company is upping compensation from £15 to a hefty £100 for affected customers as they scramble to handle the fallout.
Boil Water Alert Hits 16,000 Homes and Businesses
On May 15, tests revealed small traces of the nasty parasite in Hillhead’s water network. South West Water quickly slapped a boil water notice on about 16,000 homes and businesses, warning everyone to boil their tap water before drinking.
Compensation Boost and Dedicated Support Line
Initially, customers were promised a modest £15 payout under South West Water’s Customer Promise. But the company has now boosted that to £100 to reflect the stress and disruption caused. Laura Flowerdew, Chief Customer and Digital Officer, said:
“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience to our customers in the Brixham and Alston areas. Keeping residents safe with clean, safe water is our priority.”
South West Water is also launching a dedicated phoneline to speed up compensation claims and support local businesses and water retailers affected by the contamination.
Health Authorities on the Case, Bottled Water Delivered
The firm is working closely with the UK Health Security Agency and local partners to trace the contamination source and fix the problem fast. Bottled water collection points have been set up in Paignton and Brixham, with delivery services for those in need.
