King’s Honours Shine on Police Heroes Nationwide
Police officers, staff, and volunteers from forces across the UK have been honoured in the King’s New Year’s Honours List. From all ranks and roles within policing, these dedicated individuals have been recognised for their exceptional service.
Chief Superintendent Dan Murphy Bags King’s Police Medal
Among the honoured is Chief Superintendent Dan Murphy, the Police Superintendents’ Association (PSA) National Secretary. Dan, seconded from kent-police/">Kent Police, has become the longest-serving PSA national secretary since taking the helm in 2017. He’s played a crucial role in shaping police pay, pensions, and working conditions across the country.
Dan has pushed for fair recognition of officers’ efforts, winning changes that allow flexible working for those with caring responsibilities. He secured a disability representative on the PSA’s executive committee and negotiated extra pay opportunities for superintendents. During the pandemic, Dan served as a ‘critical friend’ to the Home Office Powers Unit, supporting health regulations and welfare for officers while ensuring frontline services kept running smoothly.
Beyond policing, Dan volunteers as a trustee for the Police Treatment Centres and the Police Roll of Honour Trust, supporting police charities with dedication.

“I would like to offer my heartfelt congratulations to all the recipients of this year’s New Year’s Honours,” said PSA Vice President Harvi Khatkar.
“It’s fantastic to see so many in policing recognised for their hard work and professionalism. Dan Murphy is especially well known and respected, a unifying force championing positive change for the entire workforce. We are extremely proud of him.”
Chief Constable of Kent Police, Tim Smith, added: “Dan’s passion and experience have driven his success since rising to Superintendent in 2007. His national work with the PSA and this prestigious King’s Police Medal reflect his tireless commitment. I’m personally thrilled his efforts have been recognised in this way.”
