Massive Blaze Hits Crawley Early This Morning
Fire crews were scrambled to Copthorne Road, Crawley, at around 7.20 a.m. today after a major fire broke out at Acorn Health and Leisure. Witnesses say workers had been carrying out maintenance on site over the weekend, focusing on the external air conditioning units.
Road Closed as Firefighters Battle Blaze
The fire forced the closure of Copthorne Road in both directions, from the Wyevale Garden Centre to the Copthorne Hotel roundabout. Initially, ten fire engines raced to the scene. But by 8.55 a.m., rescue services had ramped up their response to 17 vehicles, including five specialist units.
Firefighters Use Aerial Ladder Platform to Tackle Flames
“At 7.22 a.m. we were called to a fire at Acorn Health and Leisure in Copthorne Road, Crawley,” confirmed a spokesperson for West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service (WSFRS).
“Crews from Crawley, Salfords, Reigate, and Godstone are on site. We also have an aerial ladder platform from Horsham, water carriers from Burgess Hill and Petworth, the control unit from Haywards Heath, plus an East Sussex high volume pump.”
Cause of Fire Under Investigation
Authorities have launched an investigation into the cause of the blaze. WSFRS has been contacted for further comment as the inquiry continues.
