Ncuti Gatwa Takes the TARDIS: New Doctor Who Announced!

Ncuti Gatwa, the breakout star from Sex Education, is stepping into some seriously big boots as the next Doctor in the iconic Doctor Who series. Known for his award-winning role as Eric Effiong, Ncuti nabbed the Best Actor Award at the Scottish BAFTAs in 2020 and scored a BAFTA nomination this year for Best Male Performance in a Comedy.

“Honoured, Excited, and a Bit Scared”

Speaking about landing the role, Ncuti said, “There aren’t quite the words to describe how I’m feeling. A mix of deeply honoured, beyond excited and of course a little bit scared. This role and show means so much to so many around the world, including myself. Each of my incredibly talented predecessors has carried that responsibility with care, and I promise to do the same.”

He added, “Russell T Davies is almost as iconic as the Doctor himself. Working with him is a dream come true. His writing is dynamic, exciting, and fizzing with danger—the perfect playground for any actor. The whole team has been welcoming and passionate. I may only have one heart, unlike the Doctor, but I’m giving it all to this show.”

Russell T Davies Can’t Stop Raving!

Showrunner Russell T Davies is buzzing about Ncuti’s casting: “The future is here and it’s Ncuti! Sometimes talent walks in so bright and bold, I just stand back in awe. Ncuti seized the Doctor’s role and the TARDIS keys in seconds. It’s an honour and a hoot working with him—2023 is set to be spectacular!”

BBC Exec Hails Ncuti as a “Striking and Fearless” Lead

Chief Content Officer Charlotte Moore added, “Ncuti has incredible dynamism. He’s a striking and fearless young actor whose talent and energy will set the world alight and lead Doctor Who on extraordinary adventures under Russell T Davies’ new era.”

The future of Doctor Who looks brighter than ever with Ncuti at the helm. Fans, get ready for an unmissable ride through time and space!
