Turkey Roasted as 70 Wildfires Rage Across Aegean and Mediterranean Coasts

Turkey is battling nearly 70 fierce wildfires that have erupted across 17 provinces along its scenic Aegean and Mediterranean coasts this week. Scorching heat and howling winds have fanned the flames, turning holiday hotspots into disaster zones.

Firefighting Heroes Struggle as Blazes Still Rage

By Friday morning, officials declared 57 fires contained or extinguished — but the battle is far from over. Forestry Minister Bekir Pakdemirli warned that pockets of fire still smoulder fiercely in Osmaniye, Kayseri, Kocaeli, Adana, Mersin, Kutahya, as well as the famous tourist regions of Antalya and Mugla.

“We were hoping to contain some of the fires as of this morning but while we say cautiously that they are improving, we still cannot say they are under control,” Pakdemirli said.

Evacuations and Devastation in Tourist Hotspots

Villagers and tourists fled in panic as flames closed in on homes and hotels. Heart-stopping footage showed desperate people scrambling across fields to escape the inferno.

Manavgat, a city 45 miles east of Antalya, became a flashpoint where fires tragically claimed three lives. Meanwhile, a separate blaze in Marmaris, 180 miles west of Manavgat, has left one dead and forced mass evacuations, including hotels.

Massive Response with International Aid

Turkey is throwing everything it’s got at the fires — 3 planes, 9 drones, 38 helicopters, 680 firefighting vehicles, and a cracking 4,000 personnel. Russia stepped up, sending three giant aircraft to help extinguish the flames. Greece, also battling its own wildfires, offered support.

The government has vowed to hunt down anyone responsible for igniting these deadly blazes.
