East Brighton Food Co-op Joins Huge London Protest to Defend Right to Strike
Members of the East Brighton Food Co-operative hit the road to London on Monday. They joined hundreds of activists and union members rallying outside Downing Street. Their mission? To fight the government’s latest attack on the sacred Right to Strike.
Government’s New Bill Sparks Fury
Before setting off, the EBFC fired a warning: “This Government attack on the right to protest & strike is the biggest attack on people’s freedom in hundreds of years.”
The controversial bill, pushed through the Commons on Monday by 315 votes to 246, targets key workers in emergency services and the rail industry. It forces some staff to keep working during strikes — or face being sacked.
What’s in the Bill?
- Applies to England, Scotland, and Wales
- Ministers gain the power to impose minimum service levels for fire, ambulance, and rail services
- Other sectors like health, education, border security, and nuclear decommissioning are also included, but the government hopes for voluntary agreements here
- Consultations will determine exact minimum service requirements for each sector
The bill now heads to the House of Lords for further scrutiny before becoming law.
What’s Next?
With the bill threatening workers’ rights across vital industries, protests are expected to continue as unions and activists ramp up pressure on the government.
