Great South Run 2020 Cancelled Due to COVID-19
The Great South Run scheduled for Sunday 18 October 2020 has been axed. Organisers say the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic makes holding the event impossible this year.
Runners Offered Refund or Roll-Over to 2021
All registered runners can either transfer their entry to next year’s Great South Run on 17 October 2021 or claim a refund. Organisers are emailing all participants with full details.
Organisers Prioritise Safety Amid Pandemic
Paul Foster, Chief Executive of the Great Run Company, said: “We understand this will be disappointing news to all those who were planning to take part, but the safety of participants, spectators, and everyone involved is always our number one priority.
“Despite months of hard work exploring ways to safely stage the event while respecting social distancing and protecting the NHS, it’s simply not possible to go ahead with confidence this year.”
New Virtual Challenge Launches to Keep Runners Motivated
To help runners celebrate their efforts, the organisers have launched the Great South Run Solo – a virtual challenge starting Tuesday 1 September. It lets runners put their training miles to good use even without the actual race.
“Running day is just part of the journey. Our runners put in months of hard training and deserve to celebrate that achievement. The virtual challenge is our way of keeping spirits high,” added Foster.
With many runners supporting charities, organisers stressed donations are more vital now than ever before.
